During pool revamp procedures, pool contractors should handle all drain covers with care. This way, they ensure the pool meets all state guidelines regarding pool construction. But why would you pay attention to a mere piece of plastic? Most people think of a drain cover as a simple piece of plastic tightened by two screws. But this is not the case. Pool drain covers affect the overall functioning of the pool. So, pool equipment manufacturers are working tirelessly to come up with the best drain covers that comply with all state laws.
Typically, the state requires drain covers to be compatible with the sump structure and hydraulic system. Moreover, third parties need to scrutinize and approve drain covers before they are released to the market. Another VGB act guideline requires pool owners to install all pool drain covers per the manufacturer’s instructions.
As seen earlier, all drain covers should undergo a third-party inspection before approval. But despite the effort made by the state, most pool drain covers come with defects. Pool drain covers are pretty simple features; so, it can be hard to identify something wrong with them.
Generally, drain covers should incorporate a higher water flow rate than the pool pump. But at times, pool contractors do not install compatible drain covers. For example, contractors sometimes install a drain cover with a low water flow rate in a modern pool with a powerful pump. Doing this shortens the durability of the pool.
Over the years, there have been numerous inventions in the pool industry. Today, modern pools incorporate a wide range of water features. Hence, most pools function with pumps that incorporate high water flow rates. On average, variable speed pumps transport at least 140 gallons of water per minute in modern pools. If you have such a pool, ensure you buy a compatible drain cover.
Ultimately, pool drain covers should meet the state requirements and have a higher water flow rate than the pool pump according to most commercial pool experts. It would be best to hire a pool professional who can select the most suitable drain cover for you. Alternatively, purchasing drain covers by yourself requires you to know the exact pool pump rate. Also, consult your manufacturer to advise you on a compatible drain cover.
Dealing with an existing pool is difficult for most plasterers. I mean, they have no clue how the pool was originally built. Nonetheless, they can still identify the right drain cover for their customers.
The first thing they have to do is check the model of the pump. Doing this helps them determine the flow rate of the pool pump. And once they know this, it will be much easier for them to find a drain cover that exceeds this flow rate.
Aside from identifying the pool pump rate, they should also consider the depth of the sump. The sump is the area between the suction pipe opening and the drain cover. Sumps are often manufactured from concrete, plastic, or stainless steel. Before purchasing a drain cover, it is essential to know the depth of the sump opening. Some pool drain covers may not be compatible with your sump depth. So, check the drain cover manufacturer’s specifications.
Drain covers that are not compatible with the sump depth easily get damaged. This is because the water flowing between the pipe and the cover causes hair to twist or tangle around the area. For instance, suppose the sump depth is way higher than the drain cover; hair and water will accumulate on the tight opening. In turn, this damages the drain cover.
During installation, all drains should stick up from the floor. Subsequently, it will be hard for any obstacles to cause blockage or form a seal on top of them. All pool drain covers need to incorporate raiser rings that prevent the cover from touching the floor. Nonetheless, use all raiser rings as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
At the end of the day, buying and installing an excellent drain cover is more than just observing all requirements stated by the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act (VGB Act). The VGB act only scratches the surface. Therefore, it is up to you to find a compatible drain cover.
Pool owners, contractors, and designers should be alert. Remember, not all pool drain covers are worth purchasing. Thus, if anyone notices something odd during installation, they should speak up. More often than not, this burden lies on the person fixing the drain cover. All drain cover installers should spare some time to understand all the manufacturer’s specifications and instructions. Understanding the laws in the VGB act is not enough.
Additionally, finding out whether your drain cover is compatible with your pool pump requires you to ask as many questions as you can. Don’t proceed with installation unless all your fears, doubts, and queries get addressed.

Leslie’s, Inc., the largest and most trusted direct-to-consumer brand in the U.S. pool and spa care industry, has announced the appointment of Jason McDonell as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective September 9, 2024. McDonell will also join Leslie’s Board of Directors upon taking on the new role.
Until McDonell assumes his duties, John Strain, Chairman of the Board, will serve as the Interim Chief Executive Officer. Strain steps into this role following the departure of Michael Egeck, 65, who has resigned from both his position as CEO and his seat on the Board.
McDonell comes to Leslie’s with nearly 30 years of experience in retail and consumer products. His most recent position was as Executive Vice President of Merchandising, Marketing, and e-Commerce at Advance Auto Parts, where he played a crucial role in driving omnichannel growth for the company’s $11 billion family of brands. At Advance Auto Parts, McDonell managed more than 200 global suppliers and a global team of professionals. Prior to this, McDonell spent 21 years with PepsiCo, culminating in his role as Canada President and General Manager for PepsiCo Foods, a $2.5 billion business that included the Canadian Frito-Lay and Quaker brands. He began his career in brand management at Procter & Gamble and holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Wilfrid Laurier University in Canada. He has also completed several Executive Leadership Programs at Harvard Business School.
“I am pleased to welcome Jason as the next CEO of Leslie’s and look forward to working with him,” stated John Strain, Leslie’s Chairman of the Board. “He brings to Leslie’s an impressive combination of retail and consumer products expertise, including a track record of building and growing industry-leading brands.
